As we head towards the last week of international art fair activity for 2012, focused in Miami and Miami Beach, I wanted to remind everyone that, for many dealers and artists, this will be a make or break opportunity. Many galleries lost precious inventory and suffered calamitous physical damage to their facilities. Whole exhibitions got wiped out, along with the sales that had been made. Some have yet to reopen, and the art fairs that they are participating in are literally the only gallery space they are able to operate in at the moment.
This means that, for collectors, this will be an opportunity as well. Many galleries had to scramble their artists to make new works for the fair, normally a routine matter that this year becomes critical, as for many, it may be the only available works by those artists at the moment. Others may have sourced some unexpected secondary market items. It’s an opportunity then, to not only find fresh material, but also one where we can show the artists and dealers whom we admire that we support their vision and wish to see it continue on into the future. This means being respectful of their plight. While some well versed in the art of negotiation might see it as a chance to capitalize on peoples’ desperation and bargain prices down below the usual courtesy discount, I am sending out a plea for advisers and buyers alike to temper their quest for bargains and look at the big picture. Lowballing this year might put people out of business next year. For many galleries, it’s that serious, and it is a testament to their dignity and professionalism that they have not publicly spoken out about just how close to the margin their operations are at the moment.
So let’s show our dignity and professionalism by being supportive in the best way we know how. There are 24 art fairs running next week. That means that there is surely something for everyone. If you find yourself overwhelmed, hire someone like me to help you navigate. It can save you time and money, not to mention potential buyer’s remorse for buying something on impulse that turns out to be a dud. We’ve launched a new web site, which I’ll link to here, that gives you a better idea of the range and scope of work that we are doing at the moment. As a further courtesy, I am pasting some information below copied from elsewhere on all the fairs in play next week to help you get your itineraries sorted out.
I’ll be making the rounds with some clients and reporting on some of the things of interest I hope to come across, so I’ll see you in the aisles!

Design Miami/
December 5 – 9, 2012
Meridian Avenue and 19th Street, Miami Beach Convention Center, Miami Beach
http://designmiamiblog.com/
Design Miami/ is the global forum for design. Each fair brings together the most influential collectors, gallerists, designers, curators and critics from around the world in celebration of design culture and commerce.
Since 2008, Design Miami/ has worked with emerging architectural practices to re-imagine the traditional tent. The designs of Aranda\Lasch and Moorehead & Moorehead have slit, pinched, woven, latticed and inverted the clear span tent, both experimenting with unconventional materials and custom-engineering the modular components to create new structures and facades. This December, NY-based collaborative practice Snarkitecture takes tent manipulation to new heights.
Visitors to Design Miami/ 2012 will be welcomed by Drift, a floating environment comprised of massive inflatable tubes, resembling a topographical landscape in suspension: an ascending mountain above and an excavated cavern below. The design will also feature a courtyard seating installation, which will serve as a place for visitors to relax, socialize and enjoy the view.

NADA Art Fair – Miami Beach
December 6 – 9, 2012
The Deauville Beach Resort, 6701 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33141
http://www.newartdealers.org
Founded in 2002, New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) is a not-for-profit collective of professionals working with contemporary art. Our mission is to create an open flow of information, support, and collaboration within our field and to develop a stronger sense of community among our constituency. NADA’s fair is held in parallel with Art Basel Miami Beach and is recognized as a much needed alternative assembly of the world’s youngest and strongest art galleries dealing with emerging Contemporary Art. It is the only major American art fair to be run by a non-profit organization.
Our international group of members includes both galleries and individuals (art professionals, independent curators, and established gallery directors). The various perspectives and ideas offered by our diverse roster creates a network which, at its most basic, is a resource which people could contribute to and take as much (or as little) as they are inclined. The benefits for some may be a matter of business, for others a source of intellectual or aesthetic stimulation.
To date, our initiatives have succeeded on two fronts: making the contemporary arts more accessible for the general public, and creating opportunities that nurture the growth of emerging artists, curators, and galleries. Our EVENTS have included: artist talks/gallery walks with critics and curators; benefits in support of charitable institutions; members-only seminars to stimulate dedication and ethics in our profession; and an annual art fair in Miami, which is held in December and is free and open to the public.
Don’t plan on walking to this art fair, look for the free shuttle service near Art Basel Miami Beach.

Essex House and Clevelander Hotels, 1001 Collins Ave. and 1020 Ocean Drive @ 10th ST, Miami Beach, FL
http://www.vergeartfair.com/
Verge Art Fair is an international exposition of new contemporary and emerging art held annually concurrent with Art Basel Miami Beach. Launched in 2009, the fair defies convention as a unique exposition of artists and the galleries who represent them.
This year Verge introduces two new initiatives for its Miami Beach edition: Light Assembly, a pilot video art and architecture exposition program and Art Pages, a publication in partnership with the renowned VANlist email announcement service, slated for citywide distribution during Art Basel Miami Beach.
Verge is an international platform for the most exciting and interesting in new and emerging art. Verge exists to establish boundaries of the extraordinary as a counter to the natural compulsion towards stagnation in the way art is evaluated and delivered to the public. Staying true to this necessary state for the advancement of art requires a sustained focus on the best new ideas and practices of those marginal or newly emerging to international art audiences. The satisfaction of this fixed requirement for a healthy and competitive artistic culture is at the core of Verge as an international exposition of the highest quality artistic production and the galleries, museums and audiences who sustain it.

The first edition of the Miami River | Art Fair, an international, contemporary art fair, will take place at the Downtown Miami Convention Center inside the James L. Knight International Center. This art fair was conceived as a showcase of world-class artists and galleries in an indoor booth setting at the Riverfront Hall which overlooks the one-of-a-kind outdoor Riverwalk Sculpture Mall which features monumental sculpture on the banks of the historic Miami River.
The Miami River Art Fair has the decade-long revitalization efforts of the Miami River at its core. To do our part in the revitalization of this area, our mission is to redirect the tourism boom during Art Basel to this up-and-coming area. The Miami River Art Fair will be the first landmark fine art event in the area, and its magnitude and scope will lay the groundwork for this area to be one of Miami’s newest fine art destinations.
Special Projects and Collectives Cutting-edge projects, cultural institutions and visual art research initiatives will be showcased throughout the fair, providing an educational and informative context to the art fair.
Individual Artists: Modeled on the concept of studio visits, artists will be able to network without gallery representation to collectors, curators and art professionals.

Inspired by the prevailing need for a more intimate, personal way to engage visitors during the Miami fair week, the members of SEVEN come together to create an environment where artworks may be experienced in a curated context and interested parties can have a substantial, quality interaction with the dealers. The emphasis on cooperation rather than competition relates to the founding days of these established, long-running galleries, which despite over 120 years of combined experience, remain true to the non-conformist, adventurous nature of their beginnings in the New York and London art worlds.

Too many people go to Miami and treat dealers like simple merchants not realizing the financial and logistical extent that the galleries stretch themselves just to participate. Discounts are part of the business, but common courtesy is as well.
Thanks for a respectful and well written overview. It is greatly appreciated.
