I caught this photo by Austin Thomas this weekend, just as her solo show was closing at Hansel and Gretel Picture Garden in Chelsea – which (you heard it here first) is about to merge with Thomas’s own Pocket Utopia space on the Lower East Side. (P.U. will close in a couple of months, consolidating to the larger H&G location.)
There’s a lovely modesty to Thomas’s image of an old cellophane book sleeve, as there was to nearby wall works that sometimes consisted of nothing more than a discolored sheet of yellow foolscap, or a ripped paper dustjacket. Austin mixes the rigor of Minimalism with the romance of faded things – a rare combination. (Photo by Lucy Hogg)
