Must Watch: Paul Thomas Anderson’s Split-Screen Video for Fiona Apple’s “Hot Knife”

“He makes my heart a cinemascope screen,” sings Fiona Apple on “Hot Knife,” one of the standout tracks from last year’s “The Idler Wheel.” So it makes sense that the singer would convince Paul Thomas Anderson, the visionary film director and Apple’s former boyfriend, to direct the music video. Anderson directed many videos for Apple over the years, and the most recent collaboration has been rumored for some time. The video is a split-screen magnum opus that mirrors the song’s polyphonic and multi-voiced structure. Also, Apple takes her aggression out on a timpani, and Maude Maggart, Apple’s sister who sings on the track, makes an appearance. Watch below:
