1. James Franco is in talks to replace Jude Law, who seems to drop out of more movies than he stars in these days, in Werner Herzog’s upcoming “Queen of the Desert.” Franco will co-star opposite Robert Pattinson and Naomi Watts, “in the story of Gertrude Bell’s life as a traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the 20th century.” The film has stalled over recent months, and Franco has not officially signed on to the project, but just imagining him and Herzog in the same room is enough for us. 2. The recent American Repertory Theater production of Tennessee Williams’s “The Glass Menagerie” will be moving to Broadway this September. The production, starring Cherry Jones and Zachary Quinto, received favorable reviews during its run last winter. “A largely autobiographical drama that had its premiere in 1944, ‘The Glass Menagerie’ was last on Broadway in 2005 in a production starring Jessica Lange and Christian Slater that drew mixed to negative reviews,” reports the New York Times. Tony-winning director John Tiffany (“Once”) will return to helm the production, which begins preview performances on September 5. [Artsbeat]

3. Jake Gyllenhaal has signed on to star in “Nightcrawler,” “the story of a driven young man who discovers the nocturnal world of L.A. freelance crime journalism.” Dan Gilroy, who last wrote “The Bourne Legacy” with his brother, Tony Gilroy, will direct from his own script, with his wife, Rene Russo, co-starring in an unspecified role. 4. Corey Stoll (“House of Cards”) has nabbed the lead role in upcoming Guillermo del Toro-led FX series “The Strain.” The series was co-written by Del Toro and writer Chuck Hogan, with Del Toro signing on to direct the pilot. “Stoll will play the amazingly named Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, who investigates ‘a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism.’” [Vulture]

5. Colin Stetson’s new album, “New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light,” is out next week, and now we have a hypnotic video for first single, “Among the Sef,” directed by Isaac Gale and David Jensen. The serene black-and-white clip features a tapestry of rolling waves, underwater vistas, and rocky landscapes accompanying the spiraling saxophone that runs through the middle of the song. Watch the video below. [SPIN]
