The artist Marilyn Minter will be “punking up” limited edition T-shirts featuring steamy portraits of pop star Miley Cyrus at the Bookmarc bookstore in New York’s West Village on June 5.
The portraits were taken, and the T-shirts previously produced in collaboration with fashion designer Marc Jacobs (whose fashion empire owns Bookmarc), to benefit the pro-choice organization Planned Parenthood, which has become a symbol of the pro-life war that conservative politicians have been waging against women’s rights and reproductive justice, as they have been seeking to block Medicaid reimbursement and federal funding for the reproductive health care provider.
Minter’s portraits of Cyrus show the 23-year-old behind a steamed-up pane of glass. In one, she is licking the glass, in her signature tongue-baring pose. In the other, she is kissing the glass, her rounded-out lips forming the “o” in the word “pro-choice” that she wrote with her finger. They are shot in Minter’s signature style, which she described as mysterious, “a steamy meditation on glamor,” and “something that was very sellable.”
A third portrait, of Cyrus gazing thoughtfully into the distance from behind the same glass, is currently being sold in a limited edition of 50, signed “Miley” and numbered, at Artsy for $5,500.
Minter, an outspoken pro-choice activist, was honored with the Woman of Valor Award by Planned Parenthood in 2015, because she helped raise $2.5 million for the organization via Choice Works, an auction she had organized with Cindy Sherman and Laurie Simmons at Sotheby’s.
At Bookmarc, Minter will be on hand to sign the T-shirts, which retail for $50 each, from 3-5pm. A hundred percent of all proceeds will go toward benefiting Planned Parenthood.
Bookmarc is located at 400 Bleecker Street, New York.
