Melbourne’s iconic Flinders Street Station is looking for a little pizzazz. A recently released shortlist for a competition to redesign elements of the 1909 commuter railway station has several big names lined up, including international crowd pleasers such as Herzog & de Meuron, Zaha Hadid Architects, and Grimshaw Architects. Each of the six shortlisted teams has ties to Melbourne, either through pairings with Melbourne-based firms or connections with Melbourne institutions such as the University of Melbourne (one team consists solely of renowned Melbourne practice NH Architecture).
Minister for Major Projects Denis Napthine averred that the competition was intended to generate popular interest in the project. “Between them,” said Napthine in Designbuild, ”this group is responsible for some of Melbourne and the world’s most renowned buildings.”
