Miami International Film Festival is scheduled to take place between March 1-10, 2013.

I – Miami International Film Festival was founded in 1983; its first event was held on February 3–12, 1984.

II – MIFF’s mission is “to bridge cultural understanding and encourage artistic development and excellence by provoking thought through film. By bringing the best of world cinema to Miami, MIFF presents the city and the film industry with a singular platform that fosters creative and technical talent.”

III – The first MIFF screened some 25 films in its program; this year, more than 125 films are screened throughout the festival’s ten-day run.

IV – At its inception, the focus of MIFF was on Ibero-American films; in 2013, 41 countries from around the world are represented at the Festival.

V – Miami International Film Festival is the only event of its kind that is organized and presented by an academic institution – Miami Dade College.

VI – Miami Dade College, the largest college in the Florida College System, was founded in 1959.

VII – More than twenty Oscar-nominated have premiered at MIFF since its founding thirty years ago.

VIII – The Festival is held across ten venues throughout Miami, including: the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts, Regal South Beach Cinemas, MDC’s Tower Theater, Colony Theatre, City of Miami Beach’s Soundscape Park at New World Center, Cosford Cinema, Miami Beach Cinematheque, Coral Gables Art Cinema, O Cinema and Wynwood Walls.

IX – Some of MIFF’s filmmaker alumni include such internationally recognized directors as: Pedro Almodóvar, Luc Besson, Joel & Ethan Coen, Felipe Martinez Amador, Terence Davies, Sam Fuller, Jonathan Demme, Abel Ferrara, Andy Garcia, Werner Herzog, Steve James, Lawrence Kasdan, Spike Lee, François Ozon, Jose Padilha, John Sayles, Morgan Spurlock, Liv Ullmann, Paul Verhoeven, Denis Villeneuve, Margarethe von Trotta, and Wim Wenders among many others.

X – This year, MIFF XXX is presenting two Career Achievement Tributes: first to the Spanish filmmaker Fernando Trueba who is screening his latest film The Artist and the Model; the second to Lasse Hallström from Sweden presents his first Swedish-language film in a quarter of a century, The Hynotist, starring Lena Olin.

XI – 2013 is the first edition of MIFF during which the festival opens and closes with Documentary features: Twenty Feet from Stardom (about a group of backup singers to superstar musicians such as the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and Sting), and Venus and Serena (about the hugely successful tennis-playing sisters).

XII – MIFF’s Documentary programmer, Thom Powers of the Toronto International Film Festival and Stranger Than Fiction, joined the festival as per an invitation from its Executive Director Jaie Laplante.

XIII – Canadian-born Jaie Laplante had worked as a producer, a programmer at the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, and an associate director at Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival. Laplante joined MIFF in 2010.

XIV – One of the Festival’s most anticipated films is Dark Blood directed by George Sluizer which was the last of film of the late film actor, River Phoenix (1970-1993) who appeared alongside Jonathan Pryce and Judi Davis.

XV – MIFF has played host to a large number of young and emerging as well as international film stars including: Gregory Peck, Sofia Loren, Kris Kristofferson, Candice Bergen, Kevin Kline, Michael Caine, Antonio Banderas, Melanie Griffith, Willem Dafoe, Demi Moore, Amy Irving, Patricia Clarkson, Chris Cooper, Catherine Keener, William Macy, Geraldine Chaplin, Armand Assante, Sylvester Stallone, Viggo Mortensen, Kate Hudson, Helen Hunt, Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Pryce, Danny Glover, Julie Hagerty, Lori Singer, Jorge Sanz, Ashton Kutcher, Steven Bauer and Sandrine Bonnaire among many others.
