Hollywood’s superstar film directors, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, are used to producing strings of blockbusters. These two of the most powerful people in the entertainment industry are turning their joint attention to another American storyteller, Norman Rockwell (1894-1978). Lucas and Spielberg are both avid collectors of this hugely popular artist and their collaboration with Rockwell – actually the Smithsonian American Art Museum – is a site-specific project.

More than 50 works will be shown at the exhibition which, according to the Museum, will be “the first
major exhibition to explore the connections between Norman Rockwell’s iconic images of American life and the movies.” Rockwell’s images which often look like critical moments in the middle of a storyboard “contain rich character development, subtle scenic contexts and implied narratives that resemble movie-making strategies.”
Curators interviews with Spielberg and Lucas will accompany the exhibition.
“Telling Stories: Norman Rockwell from the Collections of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg” will be on view between July 2, 2010 and Jan. 2, 2011.
