Garth Weiser’s…Homage?

We experienced a weird sense of deja vu when visiting Garth Weiser‘s current exhibition at Casey Kaplan in New York. At first we were really loving the shimmering effect that the artist creates in these abstract works, mainly by etching horizontal lines across the wet paint surface, and then adding further scratches and markings. Then we realized that they’re a bit uncomfortably close to large-scale paintings that Jack Whitten made in the ’70s (like this one, and many others.) You decide: Influence, homage, or blatant rip-off? (We’re leaning toward the latter, personally.)
