Once a year, Phillips de Pury & Company turns over its gallery spaces to showcase work by employees of the auction house (who are probably all dreaming of the sort of improbable bursts of stardom attached to artists whose work they may have handled.) “Staff Show” is about what you’d expect: Chaotic, jam-packed with work that is alternately intriguing or derivative or somewhere in between. We’ve decided to pick a single artist whose work we are crowning Best In Show. Because we can. See who it is after the jump.
Jose Obando had photographs in the exhibition as well, but it was two sculptural pieces that earned him The First Annual Modern Painters Daily Best In Show At Phillips de Pury & Co Staff Show Award (TM). Above is 1st of the Month, 2012, which combines a Photobooth self-portrait of the artist with a a generic mannequin cut-out and a shredded Bone Thugs-n-Harmony t-shirt. Below is Suspect #3, 2012, comprised of “discarded crates” and delicious cheese snax.” It’s Minimalism meets the munchies.
