This week’s Modern Art Notes Podcast features Sedrick Huckaby.
His Hidden in Plain Site, an 18-foot-by-14-foot painting, is on view at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth through February 2. Hidden in Plain Site is one of Huckaby’s quilt paintings, a series of works that are simultaneously abstract and not, simultaneously flat and pushed up against the picture plane, and not and filled with hidden meaning — or not.
Huckaby teaches at the University of Texas at Arlington. He has exhibited extensively through mostly Texas and New England — he earned his undergraduate degree at Boston University and his MFA from Yale — and he’s won just about every major grant an artist could win, including grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Joan Mitchell Foundation and a Louis Comfort Tiffany Award. Earlier this month solo shows of his work closed at Art League Houston and at Valley House Gallery in Dallas. His paintings are in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the MFA Boston and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, among others.
Among the topics we discuss are:
- Huckaby’s interest in quilts and how they pertain to his family history, particularly to his late grandmother;
- How quilts went from being backgrounds in Huckaby’s paintings to the subject of them;
- His interest in the home; and
- The American painting tradition into which he fits.
On the second segment, I’ll be joined by Mark Carroll, the partner at Renzo Piano Building Workshop responsible for working on recently opened Piano Pavilion at the Kimbell Art Museum. Among his other Piano Workshop projects have been the Menil Collection and the forthcoming Whitney and Harvard Art Museums.
