Koshalek’s resignation has been widely reported as being effective at the end of 2013, meaning that Koshalek would run the Hirshhorn as a lame duck for seven months. Multiple sources have told me that ‘the end of 2013′ is the (rough) date that Koshalek presented to the Hirshhorn staff as his departure date.
St. Thomas told me that’s not necessarily the case, and emphasized that the ‘end of 2013′ was not a date that is meaningful to the Castle. St. Thomas said that Koshalek will be meeting with Smithsonian Under Secretary for History, Art, and Culture Richard Kurin in the coming days to finalize his departure date, and that the Smithsonian would likely announce it next week along with the fate of Koshalek’s Bubble project. Last week the Hirshhorn board failed to vote the Diller, Scofidio and Renfro-designed project forward.
