Tyler Green Modern Art Notes

Behind the scenes with Gauguin

I think that if I ran an art museum (ha!) that I’d require my conservators and curators to write and publish regularly on the web, probably via blog. This post on the Dallas Museum of Art’s new Uncrated blog is a great example why: Curator Heather MacDonald gives us an inside look at how she and her colleagues are comparing and studying two extremely similar Gauguins.

Also: Indianapolis Museum of Art conservator Richard McCoy has a cool Tumblr. If readers have other favorite conservation-inclusive or conservation-focused blogs, please leave ‘em in the comments!

  1. […] Tyler Green points out that the Dallas Museum of Art now has a blog, and DMA conservator David Marquis has a fascinating post on two very similar Gauguins. [Uncrated via MAN] […]

Slight correction to the above comment & reference. David Marquis is a conservator at Midwestern Art Conservation Center (MACC), a private conservation center housed at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA). Some of the fabulous work of David and MACC colleague Joan Gorman is highlighted in greater detail in MIA’s “Restoring a Masterwork” series: http://www.artsmia.org/restoration-online/guercino.cfm MIA is truly fortunate to have such wonderful conservators near at hand.
