San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, accused of sexually harassing 16 women including a great-grandmother, may have done something right. Filner’s plan to convert the Plaza de Panama to a pedestrian mall has boosted attendance at the adjacent Timken Museum of Art. The Timken reported 22,800 visitors in July, the highest in its history.
That’s despite the fact that the Timken had no special exhibition up aside from the loan of Giovanni Moroni’s Portrait of Mario Benvenuti (small detail at above right, on view through Sept. 8). If indeed it’s Filner and not the more chivalrous Benvenuti that’s responsible, then the nearby San Diego Museum of Art stands to benefit as well.
UPDATE: Seventeen women.

STILL ANOTHER UPDATE: Ex-mayor.
