The New York Times is reporting that MOCA will announce Hollywood agent Ari Emanuel as a new board member. Emanuel, the inspiration for fictional agent Ari Gold on Entourage, is the brother of Chicago mayor and former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.
On the plus side: Emanuel is a wealthy power-broker who’s not Eli Broad. Con: As the Times gently puts it, Emanuel “is not known as an art collector and is not deeply involved in the Los Angeles art scene.”
Emanuel called for a Hollywood boycott of Mel Gibson after the actor’s anti-semitic remarks were recorded during a 2006 DUI arrest. A 2002 lawsuit brought by agent Sandra Epstein charged Emanuel himself with impolitic remarks, however. According to Epstein, Emanuel let a friend run a porn site out of the talent agency’s offices, and he refused to let her send a script on Navy SEALS to Wesley Snipes, explaining “Everyone knows that blacks don’t swim.”
