Q&A: Greta Gerwig and the Wonder of “Frances Ha”

Noah Baumbach’s “Frances Ha,” which is currently playing in New York and will roll out nationally through mid-July, might be 2013’s quintessential summer movie. At least, there’s no better company for a drowsy, air-conditioned afternoon or early evening in the darkness than Greta Gerwig’s cash-strapped failed dancer Frances, queen of drift and dissonant conversational gambits.

Co-written by Gerwig and the director, the movie (which I reviewed here) tells the story of Frances’s crisis breakdown with BFF Sophie (Mickey Sumner), who calls off their rooming together to move from Prospect Heights to Tribeca while also planning marriage with Goldman Sachs drone Patch (Patrick Heusinger).
