Alfred Hitchcock’s Nine Surviving Silents Arrive at BAM

“Downhill” (1927), Alfred Hitchcock’s fourth completed film, augurs the director’s “The 39 Steps” (1935), “The Wrong Man” (1956), and “North by Northwest” (1959) in that it’s about a man who has to pay the consequences of a crime he didn’t commit. On July 1, with live musical accompaniment by Stephen Horne, it will be screened at the Brooklyn Academy of Music as part of “The Hitchcock 9” (June 29-July 3), the touring program dedicated to Hitchcock’s nine surviving silent films, which have been meticulously restored and freshly scored by the British Film Institute.
