Gavin Brown and Rirkrit Tiravanija Are Opening a Sandwich Shop in Brown’s Basement


Manhattan gallerist Gavin Brown — pictured above, on the left, preparing sausages for Jerry Saltz with Mark Ruffalo at Frieze New York in 2012 — is the subject of an extensive profile by W Magazine’s Diane Solway, which tracks the trend-defying dealer’s growth from art handler at 303 Gallery, through a string of pop-up exhibitions including Elizabeth Peyton’s break-out show at the Chelsea Hotel in 1993 and a mini-show in a Midtown cubicle, to his current space in the West Village and his Harlem home, in the basement of which he and longtime pal (and Peyton’s ex-husband) Rirkrit Tiravanija plan to open a sandwich shop. Twitterati Goes Crazy For Nerdy New Art Meme #EmojiArtHistory

Last night a joke that began as a post consisting of iPhone screenshots showing art historical figures’ works summarized as emojis on the Tumblr blog Speaking Of transformed into a Twitter hashtag — with the help of new media artist Man Bartlett — and the new meme #EmojiArtHistory was born. Ever since, art nerds have been busy articulating the oeuvres of countless artists using the cute icons, from obvious targets like Damien Hirst to historical subjects like Edweard Muybridge. New Acquisitions and Street Art for Baltimore Museum of Art’s Revamped Contemporary Wing

Since closing its contemporary wing in January of last year, the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) has been putting the galleries through an extensive renovation, the first step in a major $24.5 million overhaul of three of the institution’s collections in anticipation of its centennial celebrations in 2014. Today the BMA announced that it will reopen its contemporary galleries on November 17 with a slew of recent acquisitions and two major site-specific installations. (more…)
