Rhizome Announces Art-Tech Teams for Next Month’s “Seven on Seven” Conference

On April 20 seven duos, each made up of one artist and one tech-savvy individual, will unveil the projects they spent the entire previous day developing at the latest edition of “Seven on Seven,” Rhizome’s annual art and tech workshop, which this years shifts from its longtime home at the New Museum to the New School. Rhizome Announces Participants for Fourth “Seven on Seven” Conference

For its fourth edition, Rhizome’s Seven on Seven conference pairing seven artists with seven experts in digital media technology will move from its venue of previous years — the basement theater at the New Museum — to the New School’s Tishman Auditorium. There, from noon-6pm on April 20, the seven pairs of participants will each unveil the fruits of their day-long collaborations. (more…)

Digital Art Proves Difficult to Preserve as Older Technology Becomes Obsolete

Heather Corcoran Will Succeed Lauren Cornell as Rhizome’s New Executive Director

After months of speculation as to who would fill the shoes of former Rhizome executive director Lauren Cornell, the New Museum-affiliated new media art non-profit announced on Friday that Heather Corcoran will take up the position beginning September 15. Corcoran, currently the deputy director of London’s Film and Video Umbrella, cut her teeth as a curator at Liverpool’s Foundation for Art and Creative Technology, SPACE in London, and Toronto’s Interaccess Electronic Media Arts Centre. The Coolest Art-Tech Project From This Weekend’s Seven on Seven Conference

Actually, there were a number of truly interesting ideas that came out of Rhizome.org’s annual Seven on Seven get-together, which as usual paired various artists with various technologists for day-long brainstorming sessions, the fruit of which were presented yesterday at the New Museum. However, one project stood out, not just because it actually created a prototype that kind of worked, but because it represented a particularly satisfying pairing of art and tech sensibilities: The “Cultural Differences” search engine, hatched by smart contemporary photo-conceptualist Taryn Simon and politically engaged programmer Aaron Swartz.
