Two Stars of the 2013 Venice Biennale Are Coming To New York


Two of the most iconic works from the 2013 Venice Biennale will go on view in New York City in 2014: Marino Auriti’s scale model of his proposed “Encyclopedic Palace” (above), which was the generative work of Massimiliano Gioni’s same-titled show, will be displayed by the American Folk Art Museum, which owns it; and Sarah Sze’s installation for the American Pavilion, which was commissioned by the Bronx Museum of the Arts, will be going on tour thanks to a $50,000 National Endowment for the Arts grant, including a stop in the Bronx. See the 136-Story Washington D.C. Skyscraper That Inspired 2013’s Venice Biennale Name

Yesterday New Museum curator Massimiliano Gioni, the man at the helm of the 2013 Venice Biennale, revealed that the international exhibition’s next edition will be titled “The Encyclopedic Palace” after self-taught Italian-American artist and would-be architect Marino Auriti’s Futurist skyscraper-as-Noah’s Ark project “Encyclopedic Palace of the World,” which called for a cylindrical 136-story spire on Washington, D.C.’s national mall.
