So get out and support the arts in NYC! (more…)

CCS Bard Offers Raspberries With a Side of Poetry at Gioni and Cattelan’s Family Business

The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard has joined forces with Massimiliano Gioni and Maurizio Cattelan’s Chelsea pop-up gallery Family Business for an exhibition by recent Bard graduate and documenta participant, Duane Linklater. The installation, “Untitled: Raspberry Garden for West 21st Street” (pictured), is focused on a raspberry garden planted in the gallery, prompting questions of history, naming and re-naming. (more…)

Photos From Thursday’s Chelsea Openings for Andrea Zittel, Thomas Hirschhorn, and More

Thursday night openings came back with a vengeance yesterday evening with a heady roster of shows that got us thinking. Three blocks up, Andreas Slominski paid tribute to seminal fluid at Metro Pictures. (more…)

Yesterday afternoon the ubiquitous, walk-in closet-sized pop-up gallery Family Business — founded by New Museum director Massimiliano Gioni and “retired” Italian art star Maurizio Cattelan, and coming off an epic opening for artist and YouTube art critic Hennessy Youngman/Jayson Muson’s open call exhibition — sent out a Facebook message looking for a blogger for the gallery’s website. Less than an hour into the three-hour opening of “Virgins 5,” the Hennessy Youngman-organized open call exhibition at Maurizio Cattelan and Massimiliano Gioni’s pop-up gallery Family Business, and the crowd is already spilling onto the street, as seen in the above photo taken at the scene minutes ago. Tomorrow night retired art star Maurizio Cattelan and New Museum curator Massimiliano Gioni’s Chelsea pop-up gallery Family Business will unveil the fifth and final exhibition in its Marilyn Minter-curated “Virgins” series, the one for which Hennessy Youngman issued an open call and has filled every available inch of the tiny storefront space. And, as the video invite (embedded below) reveals, the opening will feature a performance by Baltimore rap sensations Spank Rock. (more…)

Postmasters Will Show “Virgins” Artist Hennessy Youngman Before Family Business Debut

The art world’s favorite YouTube critic Hennessy Youngman has been poised to make his debut at Massimiliano Gioni and Maurizio Cattelan’s pop-up gallery Family Business — in its series of Marilyn Minter-curated “Virgins” exhibitions, which provide the first New York shows for young artists — but craddle-robbing gallery Postmasters will get to show works by the man behind Hen-Rock, Jayson Musson, first. Watch the Goofy Trailer for “The Virgins, Part 3″ at Pop-Up Gallery Family Business

Family Business, The tiny pop-up gallery launched last month on West 21st Street by (retired?) Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan and New Museum curator Massimiliano Gioni has been relying on the curatorial vision of hyperrealist painter and photographer Marilyn Minter to organize its series of “Virgin” exhibitions for young artists who’ve never exhibited in New York before — the third of which will open tomorrow, as revealed in the trailer below. The final virgin in the series, it seems, will be none other than video art critic Hennessy Youngman (the alter ego of painter Jayson Musson), who last week issued an open call for works for the tiny space’s following show, due to open on April 3rd. (more…)

Hennessy Youngman Launches Open Call for “Family Business” Exhibition

Art world satirist Hennessy Youngman has taken to YouTube to launch an open call for artwork for a group show at Massimiliano Gioni and Maurizio Cattelan’s pint-size Chelsea gallery Family Business. The gallery, which opened last month with an exhibition curated by artist Marilyn Minter, is the latest side project for the two art-world figures. Unlike most group shows at such well-connected spaces, however, Youngman doesn’t seem to plan to turn any submissions away. Full video after the jump. (more…)
