Post-Mortem of David Hockney’s Assistant Conducted Today

A post-mortem examination of the body of David Hockney’s friend and assistant Dominic Elliott will be conducted today. Elliot was taken to Scarborough hospital from the Pop artist’s house in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, on Sunday night and pronounced dead that evening at 6pm. “The circumstances of the man’s death are not clear and officers are currently undertaking inquiries to establish events leading to his death,” a spokeswoman for Humberside Police told The Sun. “There were no signs of violence,” she added. Advance Ticket Sales for David Bowie’s Victoria and Albert Exhibition Break Records

The forthcoming exhibition, “David Bowie is” at the Victoria & Albert Museum, is gathering a spectacular level of interest. According to The Telegraph’s Roya Nikkhah, 26,000 tickets have already been sold — the biggest advance booking figure in the institution’s 150 year-long history. (more…)

Frieze Foundation Appoints Nicola Lees Curator for the London Fair

One of the most sought-after curatorial posts in London has been filled: Nicola Lees will take over from Sarah McCrory as Frieze Foundation’s curator. The Serpentine Gallery’s former senior curator of public programmes will look after the London fair’s series of artist commissions and sit on the Emdash Award’s judging panel. (more…)

Trove of 57 Baroque Masterpieces Donated to U.K.’s National Museums

The donation of late Sir Denis Mahon’s impressive collection of Baroque paintings to Britain’s national galleries has been finalized, the Art Fund announced yesterday. Fifty-seven pictures by the likes of Guido Reni, Ludovico Carracci, and Pietro de Cortana have now entered the permanent collections of six major U.K. galleries. Twenty five pieces have gone to London’s National Gallery, 12 to Oxford’s Ashmolean, eight to Edinburgh’s Scottish National Gallery, six to Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam Museum, five to Birmingham’s Museums and Art Gallery, and one to Leeds’s Temple Newsham House. Take the Arts Out of Education and There Will Be More Riots, Tracey Emin Warns

Tracey Emin is urging U.K. Secretary of State Michael Gove to “rethink the policy” on education, the Independent’s Nick Clark reports. Currently being examined by the government, the proposal for the Ebacc to replace the GCSEs involves dropping the arts as a core subject. (more…)

Kraftwerk Ticket Rush Crashes Tate Modern’s Website

Tickets for the eight performances by the legendary electro band Kraftwerk at Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall next February went on sale this morning, but Tate’s in-house booking system proved unable to cope with the high traffic. The website crashed, and countless Kraftwerk fans were unable to reach a phone operator. Many will have to give up, despite being ready to fork out £60 per ticket (or $95, against $25 for the MoMA performances last year). (more…)
