World Monuments Fund Announces 2016 Watchlist

bo-bardi-nelson-konLina Bo Bardi’s project at the Ladeira da Misericordia in Salvador, Brazil — abandoned for over two decades — is on the 2016 watchlist.

The World Monuments Fund, a preservationist non-profit that annually rounds up at-risk international monuments and advocates for their conservation, has announced its 2016 watchlist. Fifty sites from 36 countries are being earmarked this year — including the cultural patrimony of Nepal, the first time a nation’s entire architectural heritage has been included on the list. Other notable inclusions: the National Art Schools in Havana, designed by recently-deceased architect Ricardo Porro and featured in MoMA’s spring architecture exhibition “Latin America in Construction“; the modernist National Sports Complex in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, one of several 20th century modernist structures on the list that are threatened by neglect; and the vernacular architecture of the Bo-Kaap settlement, home to a substantial Muslim community in South Africa.
