VIDEO: That Time People Mud-Wrestled in Walter De Maria’s “New York Earth Room”


While nothing much ever grows at “The New York Earth Room,” an austere and sublime installation of 280,000 pounds of earth in a 3,600 square-foot white-walled loft in Soho by conceptual and land artist Walter De Maria, who died Thursday, sometimes crazy stuff happens there.

We’d like to take this opportunity to remind you of the time in the early 2000s that the Toyshop art collective popped into the haven (which was commissioned and is maintained by the Dia Art Foundation, and remains on public view on Wooster Street), for what else: mud wrestling.
