During a recent visit to Pittsburgh’s Andy Warhol Museum, filmmaker, collector, and artist John Waters went through one of Andy Warhol’s “Time Capsules” — in this instance, a taped-shut filing cabinet — filled with photographs, documents, and other ephemera from the Pop artist’s studio. Among his finds was a snapshot of Warhol with Grace Jones, which prompted Waters to recount the last time he’d seen Jones — she woke him up after he’d fallen asleep at a party by jumping on him — and note that she arrived late to Warhol’s funeral.
Later on, delving deeper into the hodgepodge capsule — with the assistance of Matt Wrbican, the museum’s chief archivist — Waters comes across a blurry black and white photograph of two women and asks: “Is that a drag queen or Bette Midler?”
