Creative Time announced Friday that its Sandcastle Competition will return to Far Rockaway this year for a second run. On August 9, a selected number of artists and their teams will once again vie to prove their skills at building castles in the sand. But if last year is any hint at what to expect, the “sandcastles” will be far from those of your childhood beach outings.
Last year, Tom Sachs and his team dug a hole “to China,” Ryan McNamara encased a couple of friends in minimal sand-based structures, and Jen Catron and Paul Outlaw had created a structure on which they lounged squiring water from their mouths (above). Catron and Outlaw’s “Human Fountain” won the competition, taking home a golden shovel, a bucket full of booze, and a gift-certificate to online art and shopping portal Grey Area.
While this year’s artists have yet to be announced, the date and time have been nailed down. Here is the basic information:

12-2PM: Beach time
2-5PM: Artist sandcastle competition, judging, and prizes
5:30-9PM: After-party at Ripper’s
Rockaway Beach near Beach 86th Street, Queens, NYC. The exact location is yet to be confirmed, so check back.
Take the A-train to Broad Channel station. Then switch to the Shuttle (S train) to Beach 90th Street station.
