Park Avenue Armory Names Resident Artists for 2013, Including Sculptor Alex Dolan

We suspect that the Park Avenue Armory will fare quite well when it joins Rate My Artist Residency, because, well, we can’t really think of a more inspiring space in which to create art. Last week the Armory announced the artists who will be participating in its third annual residency, including conceptual sculptor Alex Dolan, choreographer Faye Driscoll, and more.

The full lineup of artists who will get to work in dedicated spaces at the historic Upper East Side armory this year are singer-songwriter Somi, performance artist Okwui Okpokwasili, the choreographers Driscoll and Ralph Lemon, Dolan — the program’s first visual artist — and the Trusty Sidekick Theater Company. As part of the program, all of the residents will give an “Under Construction” presentation on or work-in-progress performance of the project they’re developing at the Armory.

Dolan, for his part, will give a presentation in September outlining a new series of sculptures created in response to the building’s unique architecture. He was selected for the residency in partnership with 89plus, a collaborative project between Hans Ulrich Obrist and Simon Castets focusing on artists born in 1989 or later — Dolan was born in 1990.

“‘Under Construction’ is another way for us to continue our support of contemporary artists in the creation of new work and to share the creative energy coursing through the building with our audiences—in these cases, through works-in-progress presented on a very intimate scale,” Armory president and executive producer Rebecca Robertson said in a statement. “Part of the objective in the revitalization of our building is to become a hub of creativity in the City by offering more space for artist residencies, and we are thrilled to welcome these exciting artists under our roof this year.”
