Doughnut Plant Working on Top-Secret Line of Kenny Scharf Donuts (UPDATED)

kenny-scharf-donuts-paintingOn Thursday Kenny Scharf opens “Kolors,” his new solo exhibition at Paul Kasmin Gallery, and we have a hunch that the street artist, who has painted many, many delicious-looking donuts in his day, is baking up something special for the opening. Last year his “Donut Truck” pulled up to ForYourArt‘s 24-hour donut extravaganza across the street from LACMA, and now we have it on good authority that New York donut emporium Doughnut Plant — whose Chelsea branch is less than 10 blocks from Paul Kasmin’s 27th Street space — is creating a series of delicious treats modeled after Scharf’s paintings to serve up at Thursday’s opening.

A quick visual tasting menu of Scharf’s oeuvre of O-shaped pastries offers a hint of what Thursday’s menu might include: A classic chocolate glazed donut, a glazed cruller, a pink frosted donut, a pink donut with sprinkles, a coconut donut, and possibly a white frosted donut.

UPDATE: “The Doughnut Plant is creating their organic doughnuts to look like Kenny’s paintings and some of the ingredients activate in black light, so we’ll have them at the after party,” gallery director Bethanie Brady told ARTINFO via email, “and then Kenny’s doughnut cart will be on-site at The Standard and The Doughnut Plant will be selling the Scharf treats there on specified days and times throughout the exhibition.” Brady also sent along the above photo of some samples of the Scharf donuts, the delicious fruits of this collaboration between the artist, Doughnut Plant, The Standard, High Line hotel, and Kreemarts.

Kenny Scharf’s “Kolors” opens at Paul Kasmin Gallery Thursday, April 4, 6-8pm.
