David Shrigley’s New Show at Anton Kern Is Full of Grumpy Cats

For his new exhibition at Anton Kern Gallery, “Signs,” the prolific and outspoken British artist David Shrigley has seemingly tapped into the most recent super-viral cat meme, Grumpy Cat, to produce a series of foam-stuffed canvas cats, each of which is painted with a decidedly downtrodden message.

Shrigley’s veritable litter of grumpy cat sculptures includes “Cat (It’s OK, It’s Not OK)” (at top, all works 2012), “Cat (Kiss My Ass)” (above), “Cat (Kill Your Pets)” (below), and more. The total tally of tabbies in the exhibition makes this the largest concentration of cats in an exhibition on West 20th Street since cat-obsessed painter Allison Schulnik’s exhibition “Mound” at ZieherSmith in December 2011.

All the way back to 2011! Just curious if this is why the was was deemed writing about? It’s hard to tell if the author believes that this show is worth checking out. Also, just curious when the last show with a lot of dogs? Are we due for one for those too?

  2. Makes me wanna go kick those cats.
