Betty Tompkins wants your help with an art project. The American artist, whose explicit “Fuck” paintings were displayed in Brussels and Miami last year, has issued an open call for words that describe women, which she plans to use in a new series of paintings. The words “can be affectionate (honey), pejorative (bitch), slang, descriptive, etc.,” she wrote in an e-mail to friends and associates on Monday.
The idea stretches back to 2002, when Tompkins issued the same call. She received 1500 words and phrases in seven languages. Last fall, 500 of those words were read as a performance at the Zine Fair in Vienna; they were also shown as a 27-page text piece at Vienna’s Galerie Lisa Ruyter. Before they take on new life in painting form, Tompkins is looking for another round of contributions. (Any language is welcome, though you must include an approximate English translation.)
If you have a favorite — or least favorite — word used to describe women, leave it in the comments below and we’ll round them up and send them Betty Tompkins’s way.

Cactus:
Ideal metaphor for a strong woman; hardy, self-sufficient, as well as beautiful and dangerous in equal measure.
Every Shabbat evening many orthodox Jewish men read what is known as the Woman of Valor text to their wives. This text is Proverbs 31:10-31. A good woman may be reffered to as a “Woman of Valor”, much the way a “good” man is called a “mensch”. So, I say: Woman of Valor.
