Yesterday the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) in Long Beach received a $25,000 donation from the Hyundai Motor America car company, the Los Angeles Times reports, in order to help it buy a bus so that it can bring an additional 5,000 students to the museum every year.
The Hyundai donation is a matching gift for MOLAA’s campaign to raise the $50,000 it needed to buy a bus, which became a necessity after cuts to arts education made it impossible for local schools to pay for students’ transportation to and from the institution.
Not unlike local school districts’ arts programs, MOLAA has had to take some drastic steps to reduce spending, which included cutting its budget for operations by 15 percent and laying off its chief curator.
