It doesn’t have the pedigreed history of the former DIA Art Foundation building on West 22nd Street, which housed the New Art Dealers’ Alliance’s first New York fair last year during Frieze Week, but the massive, multi-court Lower East Side sports complex on the East River’s Pier 36 Basketball City — where NADA New York 2013 will take place, May 10-12 — does have more space. A lot more space.
“It’s a big, wide open pier with windows,” NADA director Heather Hubbs told Art Fag City’s Corinna Kirsch. “We like to try and find different spaces.” The Armory Show, which takes place in early March, also happens in a big wide open pier with windows — two of them in fact. The new location at 299 South Street will put NADA directly down-river from Frieze New York, whose second edition runs May 10-13 2012 on Randall’s Island.
The new NADA location marks a further shift to the east for Frieze Week — as opposed to Armory Week’s west-side bias — particularly with the arrival of French fair Cutlog at nearby PS160 for the first time this year.
