Art Basel Hong Kong has released its exhibitor list. This year marks its first edition as an official member of the Swiss art fair conglomerate Art Basel. (The European company purchased a 60 percent stake in the fair, formerly known as Art HK, in 2011.) So, what’s different now that Art HK’s been Swiss-ified? The list slightly smaller — 245, down from 264 last year — with a number of new high-wattage international names.
The fair will be divided into four sectors that may have been named by some kind of focus group: Galleries, Insights, Discoveries and Encounters. (We wouldn’t make that up.) The main section features 171 galleries, including newcomers 303 Gallery (New York), Galerie OMR (Mexico City), Dirimart (Istanbul), and Dominique Levy Gallery (New York). Unsurprisingly, many top international dealers are returning to the section as well, including Acquavella Gallery, David Zwirner, Gagosian, and Hauser & Wirth. Among those not coming back to Hong Kong are New York’s Cheim and Read and Gallery Hyundai of South Korea.
“When we were looking at and analyzing the other two Art Basel fairs, a clear logic emerged, which is that the host country or region accounts for 50 percent of the exhibitor lineup,” Art Basel Hong Kong director Magnus Renfrew told ARTINFO. The selection committee made sure, then, that 50 percent of participating galleries hailed from the Asia or Asia-Pacific region, including new gets Galleryske of Bangalore and Chi-Wen Gallery of Taiwan.
In keeping with the regional emphasis, Art Basel Hong Kong’s Insights section presents 47 galleries from Asia and the Asia-Pacific (for hardcore Art HK fans, this may be similar to the Asia One section). The Encounters section will present institutional, large-scale sculpture and installation works throughout the fair’s two exhibition halls. The Discoveries sector is reminiscent of Art HK’s emerging art-focused Futures section, but offers exclusively solo and two-person presentations. Also new: A panel of judges will award a $25,000 prize to the top emerging artist in that sector.
So, what are the perks of working with an international conglomerate like Art Basel? Renfrew gushed about getting access to Art Basel’s ample supply of VIP relations managers (25!). Then there’s the less glamorous stuff: “They’ve put considerable amounts of money into new walling for the fair,” he said.
The inaugural Art Basel Hong Kong will take place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from May 23 to May 26. Check out the full exhibitor list, in alphabetical order, below.
