Open Call for Tumblr and Paddle8’s Animated GIF Exhibition at Art Basel Miami Beach

Today the micro-blogging platform Tumblr and art e-commerce site Paddle8 launched Moving the Still: A Festival of GIFs, a crowd-sourced, open call exhibition in recognition of the 25th anniversary of the GIF, an image file type that allows for short, looping animations. The open call, beginning today and continuing through November 7, will result in a physical, brick-and-mortar exhibition during the Art Basel Miami Beach fair in December featuring GIFs selected by an all-star committee.

The Moving the Still selection committee includes former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe, the Rodarte sisters, internet art star Ryan Trecartin, Performa founder RoseLee Goldberg, Nicola Formichetti, Richard Phillips, James Frey, and the duo of Vinoodh Matadin & Inez van Lamsweerde.

Along with the open call show, Paddle8 is hosting an online exhibition of GIFs by artists from the selection committee, including animated images by Jim Drain, Naomi Fisher, Nick Knight, Adam Dugas, Casey Spooner, Spencer Sweeney, and Nicolas Fernandez.

Winners of the open call GIF competition will be announced on November 26. Their works will be shown during Art Basel Miami Beach (December 6-9) in the popular, art-filled Wynwood neighborhood.
