As part of her new, spot-filled retrospective at the Whitney Museum — and its Louis Vuitton boutique outpost — Japanese Pop and dot artist Yayoi Kusama has created a major public art installation on Hudson River Park’s Pier 45 at West 10th Street.
The many-pieced installation, “Guidepost to the New Space” (2004), is being presented thanks to the collective efforts of the Whitney, Gagosian, and the Hudson River Park Trust, and will be on view throughout the summer until an undetermined date — her Whitney show closes September 30.
Though they seem solid, and the artist herself posed perched on one of them, the sculptures are fairly fragile. The Whitney website cautions: “Upon your visit, please do not climb, sit, or play on the sculptures.” This, in other words, is a playground for your eyes, but not for your body.
