The most coveted piece of street art real estate in New York City — Goldman Properties‘ large wall on Houston Street at the corner of Bowery famously painted by Keith Haring and most recently revamped by L.A.-based artist Retna — has finally been given over to a female artist, Japan-born Brooklynite Lady Aiko, who began work there this weekend.
When ARTINFO swung by the mural yesterday evening, it looked as though Aiko had begun work on the western section of the mural, while a pair of smaller pieces by uninvited guest artists had been added to its east-most end.
New Yorkers may have most recently seen her work in the Museum of Sex’s adult street art exhibition, which closed last month. It’s still too early to tell how adult Aiko’s Bowery mural will wind up being, but given her progress to date — and what her frequent collaborators FAILE did with the at the beginning of the year (below) — it seems likely that it won’t be quite so NSFW. Stay tuned for the full mural, as soon as it’s completed.
