Watch the Construction of LACMA’s “Levitated Mass,” From Start to Finish, in 48 Seconds

Did Jesus build Michael Heizer’s “Levitated Mass”? No, but he was at LACMA for the opening day ceremonies on Sunday. But you might think that nothing short of a miracle could have produced the monumental Land Art installation if it weren’t for this short time-lapse video of the entire construction process.

Yesterday LACMA uploaded this 48-second video that begins with the construction of the concrete trench, shows the arrival of the 340-ton boulder at the 18th second, and concludes with the removal of construction fences around the site.

It’s just like Jesus said, and we’re paraphrasing here: you can lead a rock to a trench, but you can’t make it levitate. Unless you’re Michael Heizer, and LACMA gives you a $10 million budget…
