Borrowing a page from the Damien Hirst playbook, fast-rising Los Angeles-based photographer Alex Prager will open exhibitions in three different cities this month, all of them featuring “Compulsion,” her latest vivid, glossy, and uncanny images, as well as her new short film “La Petite Mort” (“The Little Death,” trailer and behind the scenes below), whose title is a French euphemism for an orgasm.
“Compulsion” opens at Yancey Richardson Gallery in New York on April 5, followed by M+B in Los Angeles on April 7, and finally at Michael Hoppen Contemporary in London on April 20. All three exhibitions will include the new short film “La Petite Mort.”
Prager’s most recent photos veer away somewhat from the classical Hollywood imagery of her foregoing series, drawing instead on Weegee’s noir crime scene photography, as well as Surreal and Expressionist cinema.
