MMPI Cancels NEXT Art Chicago Fair, Moving Fair Business Away from Chicago

Next Art Chicago, the long-running NEXT fair which was to be combined with Art Chicago, has been canceled. The company that owns the fairs, Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc., told the New American Paintings blog that “Chicago will not remain a primary focus of its art fair business activities.”

Next Art Chicago’s Web site still says it will run at the Merchandise Mart from April 27 to 29. The fusion of the two events was to “take a considered, cohesive, and tightly-curated approach where the most exciting emerging artists will be shown alongside more established figures.”

A rep from MMPI, which runs The Armory Show, Art Platform L.A., Volta, and other fairs in addition to Art Chicago, told New American Paintings that “it is our conclusion that the great majority of the art fair market in the United States has gravitated toward the coasts. This is where MMPI will be reallocating its considerable resources.”
