The New Museum’s Spring Lineup Features All Women Artists

The New Museum in New York has announced its spring exhibition schedule, and in addition to being action-packed, it’s also notable for another reason: all the artists featured are women. The other takeaway? Brits and Swedes are in the spotlight this season. The lineup includes a show of artist portraits by British artist Tacita Dean and the first large-scale American museum exhibition of the Swedish installation specialist Klara Lidén. (The New Museum promises Lidén will create “a site-specific work that intervenes in the museum’s architecture.”)

Next up is the first New York solo exhibition of the British artist Phyllida Barlow, known for her mesmerizing sculptures that use humble materials like cardboard and fabric, followed by an ambitious multimedia installation by Nathalie Djurberg. The Swedish artist and animator teamed up with electronic musician Hans Berg to adapt “The Parade,” which consists of five animations and an unnerving menagerie of more than 80 freestanding bird sculptures, to the New Museum’s new ground floor space at 231 Bowery. The show was originally organized by the Walker Art Center.

At a time when women still make up the minority of museum collections, exhibitions, and gallery stables, it is exciting indeed to see such a power-packed program of female artists at a major institution. It bears noting, however, that the chief curator of all these exhibitions is male.
