Paddle8, the online art venue, seems to be on a roll — at least when it comes to attaching itself to big names. Last month, the news broke that comedian Robin Williams was co-curating a show for the site with his son Zak Williams. More recently, Paddle8 co-commissioned an art performance featuring James Franco and Laurel Nakedate for Performa. Now, the site has teamed up with Franco’s Oscar night date, performance-art queen Marina Abramovic.
The online “exhibition,” which is billed as Abramovic’s first foray into curating, is dubbed “Immaterial” [Note: the Paddle8 team wish to clarify that it is merely Abramovic's first time curating online]. It features works by David Adamo, Francis Alys, Davide Balliano, Stafan Bruggemann, Marie Cool and Fabio Balducci, David Hammons, Yves Klein, Terrence Koh, Jim Lambie, Peter Liversidge, Piero Manzoni, Santiago Sierra, and Nico Vascellari. I think Substanceless would be a more apt title. They certainly do seem to like self absorbed exhibitionists, but at least Williams is funny. Sometimes.
