David Černý, “Metalmorphosis,” 2007
Czech artist David Černý has just completed his first U.S. installation at the Whitehall Technology Park in Charlotte, North Carolina. The 30-foot-high, 14-ton sculpture and fountain, called “Metalmorphosis,” is a dynamic form in the shape of an abstracted human head that is constantly twisting and turning with the help of a computer-driven control center. The rotation allows it the piece to transform seamlessly from a human face to a stack of glittering abstracted reflective disks. “Metalmorphosis” even has its own dedicated webcam, found at metalmorphosis.tv.
The work isn’t Černý’s first foray into monumental public works. Just this past summer in Prague he installed a series of larger-than-life floating gun sculptures outside the Artbanka Museum of Young Art. Černý pieces, visually and conceptually punchy, manage to entertain as well as provoke.

At least in this photo, this looks pretty cool. The era of reflective metallic skins have saved many bad forms, from Gehrys weak work that always looked like it was gonna fall apart, to Koons giant puppies. But works well here, wish the webcam worked, just got multiple photos, not movement.
