Inquisitive Performa fans may have noticed the Lauren Nakadate and James Franco double billing on the biennial’s November schedule, scratched their heads, and moved on. Well, now Performa has revealed what the November 13 performance will consist of, and it’s a doozy. For starters, it involves a Ouija board.

Titled “Three Performances in Search of Tennessee,” the piece — co-commissioned by Paddle8 and taking place at the Abrons Art Center — will feature the former Twitter-mad Oscar presenter teaming up with Nakadate, of man-eating MoMA PS1 show fame, for a meditation on Southern playwright Tennessee Williams. The three parts of the performance will be as follows: 1. the two artists will hold a séance with “an invited group of special guests” to talk to Williams with the Ouija board 2. an assortment of actresses will sing Laura’s part from “The Glass Menagerie,” karaoke-style, as an audition for the role 3. actors will vie in the same way for Tom’s part in the play. “Throughout both auditions, Nakadate and Franco will intervene mid-scene as ‘directors’ as the actors’ attempt to inhabit the roles,” the press release says.

Recently known for artworks that share Williams’s theme of suppressed sexuality, Franco will not be the only Hollywood celeb appearing in this year’s Performa. British actors Joseph Fiennes and Charles Edwards (of “Mansfield Park”) will play the lead roles in Elmgreen & Dragset’s “Happy Days in the Art World.”
