A collaboration between Google and the Israel Museum has produced a digital, searchable high-resolution image of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Jerusalem Post reported earlier today. Readers all over the world may now view the centuries-old texts with a scrutiny that would be impossible even on-site.
Each online images features an ultra-high resolution of 1,200 megapixels (about 200 times the precision of a standard camera). Beyond the interactive images, the Great Isaiah Scroll (the longest and most complete of the documents) may be searched by column, chapter, and verse. The text is accompanied by an English translation tool and features an option for users to submit translations of verses in their own languages. Check out a screen shot of the online interface below.
Written in Greek, Aramaic, and Hebrew between the 2nd century B.C. and the 1st century A.D., the Dead Sea Scrolls are generally accepted as the oldest surviving manuscripts of the Bible. Before their discovery in 1947 and 1956 at Khirbet Qumran in the West Bank, the oldest versions in either Hebrew or Greek dated only back to the 10th century. They have since been an invaluable source of information about the massive history of the Bible’s transcription. Since the Google-Israel Museum project began, five of the scrolls (the Great Isaiah Scroll, the Community Rule Scroll, the Commentary on Habakkuk Scroll, the Temple Scroll, and the War Scroll) have been digitized, making them directly accessible from search queries on Google’s Web site.
Google’s undertakings allow viewers to see the objects with an intensity that would up to now be impossible — even if they were in the same room, given the delicacy of the artifacts and the difficulty of handling them. Beyond their value to historians and archaeologists, these newly available digital editions have the potential to change the way people relate to this very ancient version of the Bible. Online viewers, as ARTINFO deputy editor Ben Davis wrote last February in an Interventions column, will be conditioned to “see totally new things in them, and likely experience them altogether differently.”
