Coming up as an artist in New York City in the 1960s, Red Grooms became known for his frenetic, all-over installations that brought urban life in all its messiness right into the gallery space. Part of a milieu that included Alex Katz, Claes Oldenburg, and Jim Dine, Grooms was one of the pioneers of “happenings,” ephemeral art events that were adapted by artists like Allan Kaprow. This Marlborough gallery show focuses on Grooms’s work about New York itself. Part satirical and part loving tease, Grooms pokes fun at the city and its characters.
