Oops! Craigslist Ad For Porn Actors Actually Has Nothing to Do With Matthew Barney

In our ARTINFO checklist this morning, we reported that artist Matthew Barney put an ad on Craigslist for “retro” porn actors for a new project in collaboration with Destricted studio, following an Artnet report. As it turns out, the Artnet report was incorrect.

Barbara Gladstone Gallery, who represents Barney, has informed us that the ad had nothing to do with Barney, and Barney is not currently involved with any projects by Destricted, though he has worked with them in the past. In effect, Destricted used Barney’s name as a falsified eye-catcher — and we certainly fell for it.

UPDATE:

In an email, Destricted studio’s Mel Agace tells us that they had nothing to do with the ad, either. It was simply an exaggerated version of an earlier Destricted project, a photo shoot contest that Barney had judged. The guy who placed the Craigslist ad “was acting on his own and obviously picked up an old thread and off his own back reinterpreted the competition rather flamboyantly!” Agace writes, “As soon as Matthew’s studio brought it to our attention we contacted the fellow and had it immediately removed.”
