Staci Boris, former associate curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and senior curator at the Spertus Museum, has been named director of Art Chicago. As director, Boris will oversee the gallery selection process for the 2012 fair and curate special exhibitions and public programs. Boris will replace acting director Paul Morris, who led the 2011 edition of the fair.
The 31-year-old modern and contemporary art fair will continue to share the 12th floor of Chicago’s Merchandise Mart space with NEXT, a four-year-old fair focusing on emerging art, in 2012. Art Chicago is owned by Merchandise Art Properties, Inc., which also controls the Armory Show in New York and Volta in Basel, among others.
“At a crucial point in its history, Art Chicago is poised for change, and my goal as director is to shape the fair into a version that is smart, fresh, and exciting for the city of Chicago,” said Boris in a statement. Morris pointed to Boris’ deep Chicago roots and curatorial experience — 10 years at MCA Chicago and over five at Chicago’s Spertus Institute for Jewish Studies’ museum — as reasons for the hire.
The Windy City’s fair calendar became a bit more crowded earlier this month, when Tony Karman, former director of Art Chicago, also announced that he would launch his own fair, called Exposition Chicago, in September 2012.
Art Chicago will run April 27-30, 2012.
