Chaos reigned this afternoon at the Mondrian Hotel, as a vast crowd gathered, hoping to catch a ferry out to see “The Island,” an art exhibition featuring Bozidar Brazda, Scott Campbell, Brody Condon, Naomi Fisher, and Terrence Koh curated on Flagler Memorial Island. Apparently, more than 2,000 had people had RSVPed for the event, overwhelming organizers.
Waiting with everyone else was Al Moran, who co-curated the event with Shamim Momin for the Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND). Moran said that they had only been able to install the show at 6 a.m. this morning, since they had an only one-day permit. “It’s a logistical nightmare, but it’s worth it when you get out,” Moran added. “I don’t know how I expected this to go smoothly.”
“They’re supposed to take 40 people out there and then take 40 back, but I think people are staying out there,” the curator added. Among the lolly-gaggers on Flagler were museum director Jeffrey Deitch, collector Don Rubell, and artists including Jack Pierson, Aurel Schmidt and Nate Lowman.
Reports filtering back to the waiting h0rdes of a tombstone and two skeletons on the island exhibition add a touch of the macabre to the fraught journey.
