Christie’s announced today that it will hold a screening of two video works, the feature film, “The Rape of the Sabine Women,” by Eve Sussman | Rufus Corporation (2005), and Bill Viola’s 2002 installation, “The Last Angel,” during the Old Masters preview week in Rockefeller Center (January 25 -29). Both works take on mythical subjects, adding a contemporary spin to material also tackled by Old Masters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Nicolas Poussin, and Peter Paul Rubens.
In the last couple of years, Christie’s has moved to enliven its Old Masters sales by finding new ways to present the traditional subject matter. Last January at the same time, the auction house paired its “Art of France” sale with an auction of rare French wine vintages, to mixed results.
