No question. European art in the years just prior and immediately following World War I. The Germans, the Italians, the French and the Russians were all doing innovative work of incredible quality. None of the “fame and fortune” horseshit that permeates the art world today. Even a hack like Chagall was doing great work. The Russian Constructivists, the German Expressionists, the Cubo-Futurists, Schwitters, Klee, DeChirico, Malevich, on and on and on. We still have a lot to learn from them.
